The Modern Art Gallery in Palić and later in Subotica was founded in 1962 as an institution, the mission of which was to monitor, study, organise exhibitions and document art creations and the work of art colonies in Vojvodina and the rest of the territory of Yugoslavia. The Documentation Centre of Art Colonies in Yugoslavia was established for this purpose within the Modern Art Gallery in Subotica, which collected newspapers, documents, texts, catalogues, photographs, and everything that documented the work of a particular colony. The colonies were visited and discussions were held with their leaders and participants. The leader of the Documentation Centre was Katarina Tonković Marijanski for many years, who had also implemented projects of presenting a number of colonies with the help of the collected materials. One such project was the Address Book of Art Colonies in Yugoslavia (Adresar umetničkih kolonija Jugoslavije), published in 1986. This Documentation Centre continued to record the operating colonies, even though after the late nineties of the 20th century this work has been focusing only on the region of Vojvodina. The publication titled 50 Years of Art Colonies in Vojvodina (50 godina umetničkih kolonija u Vojvodini) from 2003 presented a historical overview of the relevant art colonies in Vojvodina, which operated in the years from 1950 to 2002. The fine arts collection has been established for a number of years through purchase and gifts of the authors, and a part of the collection shows the artistic events in the art colonies of the former Yugoslavia (Šram 2003). The majority of represented authors and their works in the collection are still from Vojvodina. Thus assembled collection of art objects, as well as the documentation materials, is now within the Modern Art Gallery in Subotica.
